The mountain peaks that you should climb in Spain

The mountain systems in Spain occupy almost half of its territory. These high caprices of nature are a great attraction for hikers and mountain enthusiasts.

In total there are 13 mountain systems and 94 mountains according to the National Statistics Institute. The Pyrenees and the Baetic Systems are the highest mountain ranges, they’re located outside the central plateau.

In the north of our country is the Cantabrian mountain range, the Iberian mountain system in the east, and Sierra Morena in the south. The insular land relief of the Canary Islands also highlights, due it forms a true mountain complex of volcanic origin that emerges from the ocean floor.

Mulhacén, Granada

The Mulhacén is 3482.6 metres over sea level, it is part of the Sierra Nevada National Park and the highest peak in the Iberian Peninsula, the Spain’s second after the Teide Peak in Canary Islands.

The best time to ascend is during spring or summer. The climb to the peak can only be done on foot along the south and west face, it’s a demanding but rewarding physical adventure.

If you decide to go ahead and take this adventure route in winter, keep in mind the weather conditions, like the snow, to make this route you’ll need special hiking equipment for cold weather.

Also you should keep in mind that the north and east faces are impossible to climb because of their steep inclination, being recommended only for expert climbers.

Start the tour from the “Capileira” or “Trevélez” villages, spending a night in the Poqueira Mountain Refuge, which is at 2500m of height, the views and sunsets from there are impressive.

El Teide, Tenerife

The Peak of Teide is the highest in Spain and it is 3718 metres altitude over sea level, also makes the Island of Tenerife the tenth highest island in the world.

To get to the top you can follow either the “S-7 Montaña Blanca – La Rambleta” trail or the “S-9 Teide-Pico Viejo – Mirador de las Narices del Teide” route or 10th trail, from Telesforo Bravo that starts from La Rambleta. To access both you need a permission, which the National Park guards will ask you at the entrance of the trail.

One of the best options is to spend the night at the Altavista Refuge, which includes permission to ascend to the Peak if you leave before 9 am.

It’s best to climb to the peak of Teide early to watch the sunrise from the top. It is one of those experiences that you have to live at least once in a lifetime. Hopefully, if the weather allows it, you’ll be able to see the 7 Canary islands.

The Aneto, Huesca

With an altitude of 3404 meters the Aneto Peak is the highest of the Pyrenees, it is located in the Benasque Valley, within the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park.

Its great profile makes this peak one of the most desired climbs by hikers and mountain enthusiasts of all kinds.

To the north of the Aneto, approximately at 2810 metres you’ll find the largest Pyrenees glacier, a wonder of nature that is currently threatened by the consequences of climate change.

To get there, there are two available routes: the northern route, starting from the Besurta and passing through the Renclusa Refuge, Upper Portillón, “Glaciar Aneto”, Collado de Coronas and Aneto Peak. And the southern route, starting from the Refugio de Coronas in Vallibierna, ascending through the lakes of Coronas, Collado de Coronas, Glaciar del Aneto and Aneto Peak.

Revolcadores, Murcia

This peak is one of the highest in the Region of Murcia. “El macizo de Revolcadores”, also known as “Sierra Seca” is 2027 metres high. It has a very peculiar karst relief, with numerous chasms and cavities resulting from the erosion of limestone.

This massif is integrated by three peaks; “Los Odres” (1880m), “Revolcadores” (2000m) And “Los Obispos” (2017m), especially attractive for hikers on snowy days, although the storms can be intense and sudden.

You can start the route from “Inazares” to “Revolcadores”, about 14 kilometers that take approximately 4 hours to walk. In addition to the storms, you should consider one of the great difficulties of this massif, the heavy fogs.

La Pica d’Estats, Lleida

The “Pica d’Estats” is 3143 metres high and is located near the border between Spain and France. It is the highest peak in Catalonia.

It consists of three peaks: the central peak with 3143 m, the western peak or “Verdaguer” peak with 3131 m and the eastern peak or “Gabarró” peak with 3115 m height.

One of the most common routes is the one that starts in the “Molinassa” car park and passes near the Vallferrera Refuge. It has a route of just over 20 kilometers away that take approximately 12 hours to hike.

To hike this type of adventure is not enough a good physical condition, the high mountain also requires certain skills to move and make decisions. That is why we recommend you prepare and plan your route well before embarking on the travel.
