9 Spectacular waterfalls in Spain

No doubt, Spain is a country rich in natural spaces and there is no excuse for you to not enjoy them. There are many waterfalls found in different rivers and streams across our geography.

Today in Walkaholic we propose you to know 9 spectacular waterfalls that you will surely love.

Salto del Nervión

It is located on the border between the provinces of Burgos and Álava. It has an impressive fall of 222 meters that makes it the highest waterfall in the Iberian Peninsula. The best time to visit this jump is when the thaw takes place, it’s the way to make sure you’ll see a plentiful waterfall.

At other times of the year, it is most likely that you will find a large gorge without water, since the water crosses the interior of this huge rock mass and only comes to the surface when its interior overflows.

The most transited access is the one that begins in Orduña, we recommend to do the circular route from the Fuente Santiago parking lot, it is of low difficulty with just over 6 km of travel and a duration of 90 min approximately.

Monasterio de Piedra

The Natural Park of the “Monasterio de Piedra” is a place with great landscape beauty where the river “Piedra” forms several waterfalls that allow you to enjoy an extraordinary moment.

It has a route of about 5 kilometers, where you’ll find waterfalls all along the way. As soon as you begin your tour, the “Baño de Diana” jump will welcome you, following indications you will reach the “Trinidad” waterfall that glides through a quite peculiar rock formation.

After passing by several caves, we’ll find one of the wonders of the park, “La Caprichosa” waterfall. Then, down the road you reach the “Fresnos Altos” and “Fresnos Bajos”, another waterfall where the water slides down a mossy stone. 

Once down way, you’ll discover the “Iris” waterfall and finally the most impressive of the entire route, a 50-meter drop, the “Cola de Caballo” Waterfall. Its name means “Horsetail”.

Waterfalls of Pozo Humos

This waterfall is the biggest tourist attraction of the Natural Park of “Arribes del Duero”. It is a fall of 50 meters. Its strength causes the effect of smoke and fog when the water drops.

To get to the waterfall you have available the route from the town of Masueco. Its route is approximately 3 kilometers with a 40 min path. Also, you have the route from “Pereña de la Ribera” which is 4 km and 1 hour walk, this one allows you to have a more complete view of the beautiful jump.

Soaso waterfall

Better known as the “Horsetail” is located in the National Park “Ordesa y Monte Perdido”. This waterfall shows its best splendor during Spring. The route is almost 20 kilometers long and can be hiked in just over 6 hours.

Along the route you will also find other waterfalls such as the “Cascada de la Cueva”, “Cascada del Estrecho”, “Gradas de Soaso”, which are a series of waterfalls in stairs form.

In addition to this itinerary, there are other options. For those more adventure demanding, there is the challenging and uneven path called the “Camino de Los Cazadores”. It runs along the valley, where the views are spectacular.

The Waterfall of Colors

It is one of the most amazing waterfalls in Spain. Not because its height but for its colors. It is located in the National Park of “La Caldera de Taburiente” and its color is due to iron and the different minerals that sprout from the earth.

You can walk the route that begins in the “Barranco de las Angustias” along the signposted path, we’ll pass through a waterfall that is at the beginning of the “Almendro Amargo” river, then continue along the “Salto del Agua” ravine, where we’ll arrive to the “Cascada de Colores”.

Asón River

It is part of the Natural Park of “Los Collados del Asón” located in Cantabria. Its spectacular waterfall is formed at the origin of the river and has a fall of about 70 meters. Along the routes there are different viewpoints to contemplate this waterfall that is the highest in all Cantabria.

You can start the route from the town of Asón. They are approximately 8 kilometers that usually can be completed in about three and a half hours.

Tobalina Waterfall

The waterfall of “Pedrosa de la Tobalina” is located in the northern area of ​​Burgos. This impressive waterfall is created from the waters of the Jerea river, affluent of the Ebro. It is 20 meters high, 100 meters long and its beautiful corners make it a unique place, especially in times of thaw or heavy rains.

Cimbarra waterfall 

This waterfall is located north of the province of Jaén and is formed by the Guarrizas river waters. It is declared a natural site for its geological and landscape values. The water runs between rocky strata very resistant to erosion, called “armorican quartzite”, its large vertical wall is worth to admire.

Chorros del Río Mundo

And of course, we have to mention the birth of the “Mundo” River located in “Los Calares del Mundo” Park, this place is better known by the locals as “Los Chorros del Río Mundo”.

From its deep cave of more than 32 km strong water streams arise more than 300 meters high. The volume of water varies according to the season of the year, the most impressive can be observed during spring, time which an extraordinary explosion of water surge occurs spontaneously, a karst phenomenon popularly known in the area as the “Reventón”.
